Nanako grew up in Shizuoka, Japan’s most renowned region for exceptional green tea and matcha. In her family’s dining room, the ritual of the kyūsu (traditional Japanese teapot) was central—it was the heart of daily life, connection, and togetherness.

At the age of 13, Nanako began practicing the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Sadō). Through this discipline, she learned the true meaning of tea: a lifelong commitment to quality, mindfulness, and deep, silent respect for the guest.

Today, this original tea culture is slowly fading—even in Japan. Fewer families use the kyūsu, and matcha is often treated merely as a trendy, “hip” ingredient, disconnected from its roots and traditions.

This shift brought a profound sadness to Nanako. The long history, the cultural depth, and the heartfelt spirit of Omotenashi—Japanese hospitality—were being lost.

That is why she founded SHIN Matcha.

SHIN (心) is the Japanese word for Heart, Mind, and Spirit. SHIN Matcha exists as a mission to restore and share the true, uncompromised essence of authentic Japanese tea culture—guided by tradition and lifetime expertise.
